The Golden Hour

Here’s a new meaning to the Golden Hour: any time the ETA on our Garmin 530 would go from “1:00” to “0:59” made for two happy pilots.

The leg between Reykjavik and Kulusuk we flew mostly between cloud layers at 16,000 ft. What a beautiful sight we had arriving at Kulusuk – millions of icebergs floating around…

“In the soup” at 18,000 ft en route to Nuuk but with worsening weather and a miserable forecast at Nuuk, our destination, made us return to Kulusuk.

Hotel Kulusuk’s best amenity is the self-serve bar. It even has some excellent Belgian beers!

Weather

METAR BIRK: ILS19, 160@4, 10KM vis, QNH1012, FEW 1700, BKN 2300 no report BGKK

Special Remarks

Not-made destination NUUK reports/forecast: FG, OVC 700, QNH1011 > 300 VV (vertical visibility), SCT 300, BKN 1000 and we received these terrible weather messages while we were freezing up at 18,000ft. The decision was made to return to Kulusuk since we were only 30mins out.
